The public is invited to the grand opening event Saturday, Feb. The Lake Boren 7. Aegis Gardens blends Eastern and Western approaches to health and wellness that nurture the mind, body and spirit.
Seattle is the largest city in Washington State and one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country. Located on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, Seattle offers many cultural attractions, sightseeing opportunities and a relatively mild climate. The community is stocked with good schools, a strong economy, with many beautiful views and plenty of activities for seniors.
A for-profit senior housing chain and a Seattle nonprofit are separately investing millions of dollars to expand senior living options specifically geared for Chinese elders. Among the amenities will be a Zen garden, sports den, Mahjong room and a gaming room. Clark said for good measure his company brought in a Feng Shui consultant to review the site plans.
Staff members flew up from California to meet with local Chinese leaders, who were encouraged to become Aegis ambassadors or board members. We can speak everyday English, but we cannot exchange thoughts. Liu currently lives in Texas and is approaching retirement age. She plans to move to Seattle next year to join her family.
Now, assisted living is moving toward culturally-authentic senior living residences as well. Keiro Northwest has one assisted living community — and a culturally-authentic care and rehabilitation center — that has responded to the needs of the Japanese community in Seattle. Poon says that affinity senior living communities allow residents to feel a real sense of belonging and that most relate on their background, upbringing and similar interests.
When Aegis Living broke ground for its new Asian culture senior housing facility in Washington state, it was a near degree day in July, and CEO Dwayne Clark expected no more than a handful of people in the audience. Aegis Living, a housing chain with two-dozen assisted-care facilities across Washington state, California and Nevada, doesn't usually receive room deposits until facilities are one or two months away from opening, Clark said, but the Newcastle facility began receiving deposits from local community members four years before the groundbreaking and is already about 15 percent pre-leased. Since the project's announcement, he said there has been an "exaggerated" level of interest from China, with buyers expressing interest in buying out the entire project or looking at the project as a safe harbor to invest their money in.
For newer Americans, especially those from non-Western societies, the very idea often clashes with cultural expectations. That's why the success of senior living options in Seattle, Washington, specifically geared for Chinese elders, might come as a surprise. But the developers say, the demand for this housing reflects changing attitudes among Asian immigrant families about how to give and receive care in old age.
Two Seattle-based companies plan to open the first American-operated senior facility in China. Chinese families used to rely on children and grandchildren to care for aging parents, but people are working long hours, and options for senior care are limited. Some investors are looking to China for opportunity, including a Seattle-based venture that will offer long-term senior care. It's opening an assisted-living facility in Shanghai next year, the first foreign investor to do so.
